This is a pretty interesting query! I thought a little about it, and the best way to sum it up is by comparing and contrasting instances of Finn and Fionna.
Finn has, at one point, expressed how he thinks people and things should love whatever makes them happy. This makes sense, him being the last human and all too aware how thing can get muddied and complicated by boundaries. Finn is simple, and believes that whatever makes people happy should in turn be simple, as being with that person to begin with takes work. You can relate that to his whole attempt to be with Princess Bubblegum despite their age difference, social statuses and degree of intelligence. Even Finn knows that getting something takes work and dedication, and hopes to win PB yet.
With Fionna, we get a bit of a different shake. Again, I still think she is older than thirteen, and as such forms beliefs similar to Finn's but with a bit of a different take. In the episode in which she is featured, she is wooed by Prince Gumball only to find out its really the Ice Queen in disguise. Her fury is NOT in Ice Queen being a girl, but that she was tricked and played for a fool. Despite this, you could see that Fionna was honestly falling in with Gumball much deeper, much as Finn would if PB actually acted on his feelings. Once she realizes it was a trick, Prince Gumball's sudden interest in taking her out seems like an insult than something for her to explore. She's carried her torch awhile, and to find that her enemy has more game than her seemingly intelligent love interest is enough to get Fionna to shake off love, and concentrate what she does best.
Do I take that to mean she won't find love? Of course not. It means that whoever she find love with has to be a person who she finds herself attracted to on a level deeper than looks: they have to be fun, and make Fionna smile and be the kind of person with the ability to make her feel warm inside. She's been through a bit since coming here, from losing Cake to questioning her own femininity to accidentally hurting her best friend. The person to make her see the good things in her has to be pretty unique.
