[Gelert wags his--now her--tail as she sniffs Sanae's hand. As long as no one seems likely to hurt Branwen, she's a perfectly gentle dog.]

It is a pleasure to meet you, Sanae. My name is Cailin. [She offers the false name not because she truly intends to deceive, but out of habit. She hasn't told anyone her real name in some time, so she's gotten used to her alias. Though she isn't quite sure about this place yet. It's too much like a Solitude Home for her to feel at ease.]

Are you a native of this Garden, or were you brought here, too?

[Gelert loves attention, so she's very happy about that, acting like a very silly puppy indeed, for all her great size.]

Do you know who rules this place? The note said it was a queen, but I'm only familiar with the king. [She's most worried that it has something to do with the Aetherians.]

Summoned you? [She's only familiar with a prosaic kind of summons, such as an aristocrat sending a message for someone to appear in court. Her arrival here wasn't anything like that.] So there was already someone here who you knew? [She wishes she'd find Mora here. Or Ada. Or any familiar face.]

[Goddess? Shrine maiden? The magic of the Gardens has trouble translating those words Branwen, because she's not familiar with the concepts.]

I'm afraid I don't understand. [She smiles politely, however.] What is a goddess?

A spirit of divine power. They are sustained, and strengthened, by the faith of people who pay them prayer and worship.

[She nods at this. That does sound familiar.] I've read that people used to worship spirits. [She realizes this might sound a little rude if this woman still does, so her smile grows slightly apologetic.] They no longer do, where I'm from. She's actually a physical being, and you can speak to her? [This idea excites the young scholar's curiosity.] I'd like to meet her sometime, if I may.

No longer... worship? Is yours a world without faith? -The way Sanae speaks of it, it seems exceptionally depressing to her.-

This is another world? [That's incredible. Yet it makes sense, explaining the strangeness she's sensed in the air around her, and in the earth and the trees. She'd thought it was more of the Aetherians' work, but it had felt different somehow. As this new revelation sinks in, she pauses, but she's not completely distracted, her practical streak keeping her attention fixed on the conversation.

She considers Sanae's question. Some people do worship certain things, or certain persons, but she doesn't consider that to be beneficial behavior.] No, we do have faith in each other, and in ideals.

[She certainly hadn't meant to make the girl sad. She tries to reassure her.]

I'm not sure what happened to the spirits that people once worshiped. [Branwen isn't sure if they were ever real at all, but she senses now is not the time to say that.] They might still exist. [It is possible.]

I have seen a spirit before, though it wasn't one that wanted worship. Many of the old beliefs were wiped out, but there are probably still people who remember, somewhere. It's impossible to know for sure. [She's not sure how to explain how closed off certain portions of the world are. She's never thought that there could be another world where she'd have to explain it.]

Branwen would love to learn more about gods and how they die if no one believes in them. It sounds fascinating, but she's been raised with enough manners to be able to tell it's a sensitive subject. So she changes it.]

You said you were a-- [What was the term she'd used, again? Oh, yes. She remembers.] --shrine maiden? What does that mean?

It means I'm a priestess that acts as a servant of the gods. I am trained to carry out certain duties. Ceremonies, exorcisms, and other means of gathering faith.
