That's good. Everyone should have things they care about.

[Kariya seems to understand that she must miss them. She comes a little closer and sits down, with some difficulty, the other dog sitting with her, taking a place between Kariya and Misaya, so she can be pet by either of them.]

Because when I was a child, I wasn't allowed. When I was older, I left home, and I wasn't able. I traveled a lot, and I didn't have much.

[Oh. Those are good reasons, she supposes, and it's good that Kariya was able to recognize that she couldn't give an animal the care it needed. It's hard for her to scoff at that and say she should have done whatever she wanted anyway.]

Why weren't you allowed?

I suppose there are a lot of reasons, but really, my family didn't want me to be happy. I wasn't good enough for something like a pet. I wasn't the kind of child they wanted.

[She laughs, but it's ruefully. She shakes her head.]

I'm sorry--maybe I shouldn't have said that. But that's why.

People shouldn't ask questions if they fear honest answers.

[She shrugs a shoulder as she says it. The question had been innocuous enough that the reply she had received had been unexpected, but she's unruffled. She can sympathize with animosity with ones own family, even if her case isn't the same.]

I never had to worry about anything like that. I haven't had a family in some time now.

[None besides the dogs, anyway. Her familiars were a way to starve off loneliness, not that she was keen on admitting that—even to herself.]

No, maybe they shouldn't. It's hard for me not to be honest.

[She doesn't dissemble so well under the worms' influence.]

I envy you that. I wish my own family was gone. I've always wanted to get away from them. Or to have another family.

From the sound of things, your family feels the same way about you.

[She's blunt, and she doesn't really care if that's a hurtful or inappropriate thing to say.]

I don't miss them. [But she doesn't wish she had been born to another one, either. She's comfortable with her position in the world, resentful of her father or not.]

[The words do hurt. She knows her family doesn't care about her. But what Misaya says isn't entirely true.]

No, that's not how they felt. They wanted me to stay with them, to do what they wanted.

They wanted me to marry and carry on the family line.

But I wouldn't do that. [She wants nothing to do with the Matou family, even though now she's stuck with them again. She wishes she'd been born to a normal family, a normal life. She wants a real family, one that feels like her own.]

You're wrong. If they only want you for something that you won't do, they don't want you.

Yes. You're right. They wanted a better daughter, or a good son. I think they only wanted my abilities, not me.

[She sounds...vaguely curious, maybe. Not as interested as a question like that probably should.]

Then they only wanted a tool.

I have something called magic circuits. They mean I can use magecraft. I was the only one in my generation born with them.

Yes, that's all they want of me, and they got what they wanted. Now I'm their tool.

[Oh. She isn't sure how to feel about that, frankly. It makes it harder for her to sympathize with Kariya, her upbringing being what it was. She understands the need to pass on magic circuits. She can only imagine it's even greater for what must be a declining family. Doesn't this woman have any pride as a magus?]

...That's not something you have to explain to me. [...] That's too bad, I guess.

[She still understands what it's like to be forced into something whether you want it or not, so she can at least muster up that much.]

No? [She's surprised, if only because magi are in the minority.] You must be a magus, then? Or part of a family?

[And she probably doesn't understand. Kariya doesn't find her opinion a popular one among other magi.]

My family are monsters. I don't want to be any part of what they are.

[In fairness to Misaya, Zouken's methods would probably disgust her as well. It just wouldn't be for what are likely the right reasons.]
